10 Easy Ways For Moms To Practice Self Care
As mothers, it can often seem downright impossible to have a moment to yourself much less make self care a top priority. It can also seem selfish to put yourself first, when society has encouraged us to give our all to our children until we have nothing left for ourselves. However, practicing self care is a must in order to function at optimal levels. In order to be a mother, wife, employee, business woman, friend, etc you MUST pour into yourselves. It's non-negotiable!
As a woman juggling many hats myself, I totally understand the struggle. However, I'm also here to tell you that self care is something that you can work into your schedule if you make it a priority. There are small changes you can make that will become habit once you decide that you want and deserve more.
Here are 10 WAYS FOR MOMS TO PRACTICE SELF CARE:
1: LEARN HOW TO SAY NO
Setting healthy boundaries is a major part of self care. Apart of why you may be feeling burnt out at the moment is simply because you’re doing too much. In addition to your day to day responsibilities, your loved ones may also ask you do a favor or two for them. Perhaps your child’s teacher has also cornered you about making cupcakes from scratch for the class potluck and up top of that your boss wants you to help out with an extra project just because they know you’ll say yes. Packing too much on your schedule will lead to overwhelm, and that’s a negative emotion. We don’t have time for that!
Between work, family obligations and whatever else you may going on, fitting exercise into your day can seem downright impossible. However, the endorphins that you produce while working out puts you Cloud 9. There’s nothing like it! Sure it feel like you’re about to die during your workout, but don’t you feel so good when it’s over? Not to mention how much better you’ll feel when you notice how much stronger and more fit you’re becoming.
3: DON’T READ OR WATCH THE NEWS FIRST THING IN THE MORNING OR RIGHT BEFORE BED
The news doesn’t do much but report on all the bad things going on and makes us fearful and sad. Of course it’s important to stay in the know and be aware of what’s going on, but do so towards the middle of the day. Here’s the thing, your subconscious is most receptive and alert during the first 20 Minutes that you’re awake. If the first thing you’re doing is watching the news or scrolling through facebook where you’re likely to stumble on to a disturbing video or photo, it’s going to affect your mood for the rest of the day.
When you’re going to bed, what type of messaging do you want your subconscious to hold with you as you sleep? It can’t be all the tragedies being discussed on the news. Try falling asleep to something light that makes you laugh. No drama, violence or other things that provoke negative emotion.
4. HAVE A HEALTHY MEAL
This is a no-brainer. Your body will function according to what you eat. A body who eats whole foods operates totally differently than one who is constantly fed junk food. Contrary to popular belief, eating healthy does not have to be expensive and it’s certainly more affordable than a doctor bill.
How easy is this? It’s your job to remain in a good vibration as much as possible throughout the day. How do you know if you’re in a good vibration? You should feel…GOOD. If you’re in a negative space and feeling bad, your vibration is low and creating a future that you won’t be happy with.
6. HAVE A SPA DAY
What is more relaxing than a day at the spa. The aroma is relaxing and physical touch helps you to calm down. Treat yourself to a facial, a message and/or a nail service.
By the way, this doesn’t have to be expensive. One way to save money on spa services is to go to your local beauty or massage school. For an extremely affordable price, graduation seniors provide beauty services at a fraction of the cost of a traditional spa.
Additionally, you can always splurge on self care products or DIY your own if you’re feeling adventurous. You can light some candles and have a spa day right in your own home.
Us millennials are totally addicted to our phones these days thanks to text messaging and social media. However, it is so important to put the phone down every once in a while, even if it’s just for a few designated hours at a time. We’re soaking up so much information throughout the day, our brains seem to never get a break. Put the phone down sometimes and have meaningful conversations in person, watch a tv show without getting everyone’s opinions on twitter and learn to be in the moment.
8. ASK FOR HELP
It’s ok to take your superhero cape off and ask for help sometimes. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed with work, your child or what to do next in life – seek help. Having assistance doesn’t make you any less of person or bad at ________ (insert whatever you help with). I promise that’s going to be ok if you don’t do everything by yourself down to the last detail. Do yourself a favor and put your pride away for a moment, you will be so thankful that you did it,
9. GET MORE REST
Can you get to bed even 30 minutes earlier or sleep in a bit more in the morning? Without sufficient rest you will not be able to function at an optimal level. Consistently burning the midnight oil is going to catch up with you eventually. Ariana Huffington is a big advocate of getting more sleep and shows how it lead to more productivity and successful [ check out her TED Talk on the subject ].
10. DISTANCE YOURSELF FROM TOXIC PEOPLE
So we all have those people that when they call we just know that we're going to be bombarded with complaints, lots of whining and nothing fun. Guess what, you don't HAVE to talk to those people! We can simply press ignore on our cell phones, skip opening their texts and make up an excuses when they want to physically come around you. Or if you're like me, you also have the option to explaining to people that you're in a happy and positive place right now, and they're affecting your mood. But of course, say it with love.
Most people don't realize how negative they are.
Do not ever feel guilty about protecting your Center and maintaining your inner peace. Once these things are out of line, it affects everything you do. For me personally, I am super protective of my energy and once I feel that it is being drained, I remove myself from that person or situation
